Call Report
A call report, formally the Consolidated Reports of Condition and Income, is the quarterly financial filing every FDIC-insured bank submits to its federal regulator. It contains the bank’s balance sheet, income statement and detailed schedules on loans, deposits, capital and asset quality, and almost all of it is public.
What it contains
Banks file one of three FFIEC forms depending on size and whether they have foreign offices (FFIEC 031, 041 or the streamlined 051 for smaller banks). Each covers the same core: assets and liabilities, income and expense, loans by type, past-due and nonaccrual loans, charge-offs, deposits by type, and regulatory capital. From those schedules come the ratios analysts use, such as return on assets, net interest margin, the efficiency ratio and the loan-to-deposit ratio.
When it is filed and where to find it
Call reports are as of the last day of each calendar quarter and generally due 30 days later. The data is published through the FFIEC Central Data Repository and the FDIC’s BankFind Suite, which makes it the most complete public picture of any bank, including the many community banks that are not publicly traded and publish no earnings release.
Credit unions file their own quarterly equivalent, the NCUA 5300 Call Report, which the NCUA publishes for every federally insured credit union.
Why it matters
For a private community bank, the call report is often the only financial disclosure there is. RAVEN’s bank deep dives and audits start from it, alongside HMDA mortgage data, to measure lending mix, growth and efficiency against peers.
